Every photo you take carries invisible information baked into the file, called EXIF metadata. Most of the time it's harmless and even useful — but sometimes it reveals more than you'd want, including exactly where a photo was taken. Here's what EXIF is, why it can be a privacy issue, and how to remove it.
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data is recorded automatically by cameras and phones when you take a photo. It typically includes the date and time, camera or phone model, and settings like exposure, aperture and ISO. Photographers use it to review how a shot was taken.
The sensitive part is that many phones also embed GPS coordinates — the precise latitude and longitude where the photo was captured — unless you've turned location off for the camera.
If you share a photo that still contains GPS data, anyone who downloads it can see exactly where it was taken — which could be your home, your workplace or a child's school. That's a real privacy concern for photos posted publicly or sent to people you don't fully trust.
Removing EXIF also slightly reduces file size and strips details you may simply prefer not to share, like the exact time or the device you used.
Some do, some don't, and the behaviour changes over time — so you shouldn't rely on it. Many platforms strip EXIF when you upload, but photos shared by email, messaging apps set to "send as file", cloud links or direct download often keep the full metadata intact. The safe approach is to remove it yourself before sharing anything sensitive.
The simplest way is to process the image with a tool that drops metadata.
