Removing the background from an image used to mean fiddling for ages with selection tools in photo software. Here's how it works and how to get a clean result.
Background removal separates the main subject of a photo — a person, a product, an object — from everything behind it, then deletes the background so it becomes transparent. The result is usually saved as a PNG (or WebP), because those formats support transparency; a JPEG can't, and would fill the background with a solid colour instead.
Modern tools do this automatically by detecting the subject's edges, so you don't have to trace anything by hand.
Clean cut-outs are everywhere: product photos on a white or coloured background for e-commerce, profile and team photos, logos that need a transparent background to sit on any design, and graphics for presentations or social posts. Placing a subject on a transparent background gives you total flexibility over what goes behind it.
Automatic removal works best when the subject stands out clearly from the background — good lighting, decent contrast, and edges that aren't too fuzzy. Hair, fur and transparent or reflective objects are the hardest cases, since their edges are complex.
For the cleanest cut-out, start from a sharp, well-lit photo where the subject is in focus and clearly separated from what's behind it. Simple, uncluttered backgrounds give the tool the easiest job.
